EDLa CMO Update

With Hurricane Rafael shifting away from New Orleans, it seems timely for an update on the Hurricane Ida mediations that have occupied so many of us for the past few years. The FBA recently presented a CLE giving a “Report Card on the EDLA's Hurricane IDA Case Management System.” For those not in attendance, here are two big takeaways. First, we’ve settled a lot of cases. Of the roughly 5,500 cases assigned, over 4,000 have settled at mediation. Many more that did not settle at mediation ultimately settled before the Magistrate. As a result, there has yet to be hurricane trial in the Eastern District. Second, we’re almost done with this. The EDLA’s special master has only about 250 cases left to assign and has told us mediators to complete any remaining mediations by early 2025.
